Biologists feared that this name would be offensive to some Native American tribes, who are intimately involved in the conservation effort of the Duck and sustainable living practices. The American Ornithologists' Union stated that "political correctness" was not sufficient to change the name, but "to conform with English usage in other parts of the world", it officially adopted the name "Long-tailed Duck". The effects of chronic oil pollution from small-scale oil discharges in non-breeding areas is a significant threat to these uniquely voiced species, as Long-tailed Ducks form large aggregations that overlap with major shipping and oil transportation routes. Additionally, as this species are the deepest divers of all Ducks, they have a habit of getting caught in fishing nets. For this reason, Long Tailed Ducks are one of the few bird species requiring both marine and bird conservation efforts to assist them in their plight. STOP. LISTEN. Elephant boom. This amazing sound is a low frequency Elephant call, inaudible to our human ears in its original form. I used a sennheiser MKH 110 to record it, a specialist microphone that is used to measure low frequencies. I can record down to 1hz with it. Imagine when I discovered the sound in my studio after recording the elephants. I saw the metres moving but couldn’t hear anything until I resampled it to our audible range. These infrasounds were discovered in the late 1980s, with later studies indicating that Elephants use them to coordinate movements with other far-off herds. Combined with foot stomping, the seismic waves Elephants generate can travel nearly 20 miles along the surface of the Earth. The Elephants receiving these calls sense the low frequency vibrations through their feet - hence why Elephants are referred to as picking up the ‘good vibrations’. However, this recording not only includes the gentle roar of a far off contributor to the soundscape, but also a species that is no longer with us. The Panamanian golden tree frog. Such losses in nature are likely to continue at a rapid pace in Panama, with soil erosion occurring at a rate of 2,000 tons per year - a constant disruption to the natural communities.
