ARCTIC WILDLIFE REFUGE

The Arctic refuge is my spiritual home, as a kid i always wanted to go there after seeing this fragile ecosystem on TV. I first went there in 2004 to record around the Canning delta for the book “Arctic Wings” The CD included was beautiful. It even compelled Jimmy Carter to write to me to say he and his wife went to sleep listening to it. Jimmy Carter actually wrote the foreword to the book. This is a recording from four trips including the Brooks range and coastal plain.

DOI INTHANON NATIONAL PARK

Often described as the “Roof of Thailand”, the park is part of the Himalayan mountain range. I recorded this in late spring and what amazed me was the amount of critters i could hear in the cold air as dawn broke…. Owls, doves, sunbirds and insects. Apart from the noises of the critters, I heard very little man made noises which made the recording more pleasing.

HURRICANE DORIAN

Hurricanes bring amazing sounds. I love the wind. It's extremely hard to record because it bounces off all things. Hurricane Dorian skirted through Florida with winds up to 120 mph and eventually made land in the Carolinas. Listen to its force as it blows through trees and low growing foliage. The whistle of wind is quite dynamic.

OCEAN WAVES

’m always asked for ocean sounds. They have become one of the most popular requests. I’ve recorded ocean surf in over 50 countries and each one is different. There is a method to recording oceans, you can’t just set up a recoding rig and hit the record button. I record 3 different aspects and mix them all together giving a “spacial feeling to the recording. This particular ocean is recorded around Melbourne beach in Florida

OKAVANGO DELTA AT NIGHT

The Okavango Delta is a unique pulsing wetland. More correctly an alluvial fan, the delta covers between 6 and 15 000 square kilometres of Kalahari Desert in northern Botswana and owes its existence to the Okavango (Kavango) River which flows from the Angolan highlands, across Namibia’s Caprivi Strip and into the harsh Kalahari Desert.. the gentle sounds of insects and the distant sound of jackets can be heard in this soundscape. It’s such a tranquil place and one of my most favorite places on earth.

RAINS ACROSS THE PLAINS

Apart from ocean sounds, rain and thunder are always in demand. Recordings of rain and thunder are plentiful on the web but sounds of rainstorms can sound just like “white noise” if they are not recorded properly. Again, i record 3 separate recordings of depth and mix together to create the storm. This recording, done on the great plains, makes you feel like you are in it wanting to reach for cover.

RAINY SEASON IN COSTA RICA

When the dry season ends, the rains dominate Costa Rica and in some areas creates flooding. The large tropical foliage in the jungles sound like the rhythm section to an orchestra, each leaf has its own sound as it repels the raindrops. The trick is to record the rain without it banging on to the microphones.. i generally make a tent out of foliage and sticks and place my recording system under for protection. This is a recording in the Osa Peninsula, a magical part of Costa Rica to the south.

SERENGETI DAYS AND NIGHTS

The Serengeti is vast and an important part of Africa for animals and the great migration. Because of the great expanse of land, winds blow dust in the air as mammals roam the plains looking for food. When i think of Africa my thoughts always go back to this magical place and it reminds me how fragile we are. At any given time something happens, be it Lions or the many wildebeest that pass through. There is always something happening in this fragile landscape.

It was difficult to record here at the time of my recordings as journalists from the BBC had been banned by the political party that were in goverment. I recorded this in Gonarezhou National Park in the Masvingo Province. Kingfisher, baboon, chimpanzee, greater honey guides, golden tail, white browed sparrow weaver, pied crows and the “go ahead bird are all here.
