Arctic Wildlife Refuge

The Arctic refuge is my spiritual home, as a kid i always wanted to go there after seeing this fragile ecosystem on TV. I first went there in 2004 to record around the Canning delta for the book “Arctic Wings” The CD included was beautiful. It even compelled Jimmy Carter to write to me to say he and his wife went to sleep listening to it. Jimmy Carter actually wrote the foreword to the book. This is a recording from four trips including the Brooks range and coastal plain.

Cape Tribulation Rainforest

Cape tribulation and the Daintree forest is one of my most favorite places on earth. There is not a time you are not immersed in sounds, be it day or night the sounds of the rainforest are magical. Birds and insects give way to amphibian choruses at night. Thunderstorms and rain shower complete the orchestra. Vape Tribulation can be found in Queensland Australia and is one of the oldest rainforests on earth

Dawn in the Sierra Nevadas

Recorded around Yuba Pass and Lincoln meadows. I love the dawn choruses here, surrounded by pine trees and expansive meadows with a distant stream. The air is always so fresh after the snow melts. Dark-eyed juncos and sparrows with distant quails make the morning songs interesting.

Desert Winds

Recorded in Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge, Mockingbirds, wrens, jays and warblers sing in the warm morning sunshine as strong winds blow the tumbleweed across the desert. Each desert i’ve recorded in has a different sound signature. Listen to this and compare to others in this collection…

Doi Inthanon National Park

Often described as the “Roof of Thailand”, the park is part of the Himalayan mountain range. I recorded this in late spring and what amazed me was the amount of critters i could hear in the cold air as dawn broke…. Owls, doves, sunbirds and insects. Apart from the noises of the critters, I heard very little man made noises which made the recording more pleasing.

Hurricane Dorian

Hurricanes bring amazing sounds. I love the wind. It's extremely hard to record because it bounces off all things. Hurricane Dorian skirted through Florida with winds up to 120 mph and eventually made land in the Carolinas. Listen to its force as it blows through trees and low growing foliage. The whistle of wind is quite dynamic.

Loons at Chetek Lake

We call Loons “Divers” in Europe but they make the same eerie calls as each other. Chetek lake can be found in Wisconsin. I stumbled on this body of water one day looking at a map. The night air was filled with insects and loon calls. Great to relax to or help with insomnia.

Montana Snow Storm

How do you record a snow storm?.. well go to a place that has loads of it and wait for the heavens to open. It’s always better when you record in the open around trees to get that whistle sound as the biting winds blow the flakes into drifts. This was recorded in Big Sky country in February on my way to Idaho. I stopped by chance in a very remote area.

Okavango Delta at Night

The Okavango Delta is a unique pulsing wetland. More correctly an alluvial fan, the delta covers between 6 and 15 000 square kilometres of Kalahari Desert in northern Botswana and owes its existence to the Okavango (Kavango) River which flows from the Angolan highlands, across Namibia’s Caprivi Strip and into the harsh Kalahari Desert.. the gentle sounds of insects and the distant sound of jackets can be heard in this soundscape. It’s such a tranquil place and one of my most favorite places on earth.

Olympic Waves and Beaches

While i visit the Olympic peninsula to record, i’ll always take my trusted recording set up to one of the many beaches in the area, Like i have said in other write-ups, beaches have different sound signatures and the Olympic beaches are no different. Tides that bash into the corner of the Olympic Peninsula are spectacular and if you can record at high tide you won’t be disappointed. Take a listen here.

Rainy Season in Costa Rica

When the dry season ends, the rains dominate Costa Rica and in some areas creates flooding. The large tropical foliage in the jungles sound like the rhythm section to an orchestra, each leaf has its own sound as it repels the raindrops. The trick is to record the rain without it banging on to the microphones.. i generally make a tent out of foliage and sticks and place my recording system under for protection. This is a recording in the Osa Peninsula, a magical part of Costa Rica to the south.

Serengeti Days and Nights

The Serengeti is vast and an important part of Africa for animals and the great migration. Because of the great expanse of land, winds blow dust in the air as mammals roam the plains looking for food. When i think of Africa my thoughts always go back to this magical place and it reminds me how fragile we are. At any given time something happens, be it Lions or the many wildebeest that pass through. There is always something happening in this fragile landscape.

Zimbabwe Dawn

It was difficult to record here at the time of my recordings as journalists from the BBC had been banned by the political party that were in goverment. Zimbabwe has vast wild spaces with so many critters in them but it is now under threat with hunting and poaching becoming prominent. I recorded this in Gonarezhou National Park in the Masvingo Province. Kingfisher, baboon, chimpanzee, greater honey guides, golden tail, white browed sparrow weaver, pied crows and the “go ahead bird are all here.

Cévennes National Park

The Cévennes in southern France are the highest and southernmost part of the Massif Central. Famous are its dramatic limestone gorges and the colonies of vultures that build their nests on their ledges. Equally superb are the rivers valleys and the high limestone plateaux. This is a recording in a wooded area below a steep peak around 6:00am as the dawn breaks. Rivers echo around the mountains and an abundance of songbirds break the morning air...

Tropical rainforests have some of the largest rivers in the world, like the Amazon, These mega-rivers are fed by countless smaller tributaries, streams, and creeks. Endangered Animals - No F!!!* Time

When i was a kid, extinction hadn’t got the seriousness as it does today in my mind, We talked of the dinosaurs, dodos and passenger pigeons as extinct. Today, over 1 million species stand on the precipice of extinction. These are a few of those animals in danger of being lost forever. We have “No fucking time” left to save them?

Ocean Waves

I’m always asked for ocean sounds. They have become one of the most popular requests. I’ve recorded ocean surf in over 50 countries and each one is different. There is a method to recording oceans, you can’t just set up a recoding rig and hit the record button. I record 3 different aspects and mix them all together giving a “spacial feeling to the recording. This particular ocean is recorded around Melbourne beach in Florida

The Olympic Forest

This is a wonderful place to be in....moss hanging from trees in groves you can get lost in, old wood and an abundance of sounds. Put on your headphones and emerge yourself in this recording.

Puerto Rican Nights

It’s hard to record in Puerto Rica without capturing the calls of the coqui frog. The frog dominates the soundscape, but up in the forests I found a place that was less dense. Screech owls, tanagers and an abundance of critter calls makes up this recording of one of the jewels of the greater Antilles.

Rains across the Plains

Apart from ocean sounds, rain and thunder are always in demand. Recordings of rain and thunder are plentiful on the web but sounds of rainstorms can sound just like “white noise” if they are not recorded properly. Again, i record 3 separate recordings of depth and mix together to create the storm. This recording, done on the great plains, makes you feel like you are in it wanting to reach for cover.
